We want to welcome everyone to our exclusive MySpace Interview with Independant Comic Publisher from Alterna Comics Peter
Simeti.
http://www.myspace.com/kingscomix.
We want to thank Peter Simeti for this interview and for the great work he and his staff have put into making Alterna
Comics the Independent monster that it is.
Question: So how long have you been publishing comics?
Answer: Wee been publishing for almost a year now. We started getting information
together in February 2006 and came out with our first book, Spectrum, in September 2006. Since then, wee made leaps and
bounds in many aspects of the business from how many stores carry our books, to the amount of titles we have, to even the
ways in which a reader can purchase our books.
Question: What kind of influences did you have growing up to make you want to be in
comics?
Answer: My influences were always from the classic superheroes like Batman, Superman,
Spider-man, The X-men, etc. Even though we don publish super hero books, there is still a special place in my heart for
them.
Question: What was your first comic book and who is your favorite artist?
Answer: My first comic was an issue of Amazing Spider-man. It was the issue where he
fights Juggernaut little did I know how iconic that fight would later become! My favorite artist would have to be either
Jim Lee or Alex Ross. I know they are default answers..but I feel they are so widely known for good reasons!
Question: How many different comics have you published and what are the titles?
Answer: We are currently publishing 6 books. Their titles are Spectrum, The Chair, Diary
of the Black Widow, Morbid Myths, Birth ( a graphic novel prelude to an upcoming series ), and Sunny Hills: Asylum for the
Criminally Insane.
Question: Do you think the independent market is thriving or is it going into limbo and
falling in popularity?
Answer: I think the indie market in almost every facet of entertainment is in a well
deserved oomperiod. It scary though because with all bubbles, they eventually burst. I think if indie creators do
manage to stay true to themselves though and still put quality and creativity before the easy buck, then I think independent
products will always have a strong audience.
Question: How long do you want to publish comics and is there any one title that you
favor over the others?
Answer: I want to publish comics for as long as I possibly can. I really don know if I favor any specific title over the
rest since I choose all of them based on what I think people would (and should) be reading. I enjoy the detective/humor
quality of Diary of the Black Widow, I like the dark humor and supernatural aspects of Sunny Hills, I like the way Morbid
Myths is evolving into a wilight zonecomic, and I love the art and new world fantasy creations in Birth. I the
writer/artist on Spectrum and I the writer of The Chair, so I really don feel it my place to toot my own horn on those
two books! All I can say is that I write/draw/publish what I personally would buy if I saw it in a shop.
Question: Are there any possible movie deals or considerations in the future of any
current published projects?
Answer: I believe all these comics have unlimited potential in all medium areas. Some
of them can be made into movies, some would work better as TV, and others could even be carried on into novel form. As of
right now though, nothing is in the works just yet and I think that just fine!
Question: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers or artists who want to submit
their work to your company?
Answer: Listen to criticism, but don take it to heart. Also, if you feel 100%
positive that you have created something that you are truly happy with never let anyone put you down about it. Do whatever
it takes to get your works out there; the road is hard and sometimes a lot longer than you expect, but the rewards are well
worth it!
Question: Are there any conventions you are showing up to in 2007 and do you prefer one
from another?
Answer: I have to admit that I love big conventions. Like the NY Comicon, Wizard World,
San Diego (of course) but there are definitely many charms to smaller conventions as well. As of right now, our convention
schedule for the next few months is listed on our site on the link onvention touroff the bat though, I can tell you
that wee excited about having a table for the Big Apple Con in NYC on January 19th and 20th and if anyone wants some promo
material and some autographs or just wants to talk definitely stop on by!
Question: Last but not least what other publisher do you think you mirror your business
with and if none why?
Answer: I try to mirror my business after Image Comics and any other creator owned
publishing business. Image has had some issues over the years but theye worked hard to rebuild their reputation as a
leader in the independent community. On certain aspects though, I don mirror myself after anyone, like the fact that I
respond daily to emails, questions, comments, etc. personally and I try to keep people informed without forcing an opinion on
them. At the end of the day, it about how much you give of yourself and how much passion you put into your work. I think
that we have the most passionate creators anyone has seen and if Fate smiles on us, wel keep doing what we love!
